Utica man accused of choking girlfriend

(WKTV) - A Utica man has been charged after he allegedly strangled his girlfriend, Utica police said.

Steven Starkey, 37, of Neilson Street, is charged with assault, strangulation and aggravated harassment.

According to authorities, on Sunday afternoon, officers responded to a home in the 1500 block of Genesee Street. A woman at the home said she argued with her boyfriend and he punched her several times in the head, kicked her in the back and slammed her head into a counter. The woman also alleged the man chocked her to the point of unconsciousness several times and threatened her life.

The man had fled before police arrived. There was an order of protection issued against the man. The U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, along with the UPD, Oneida County Probation, Oneida County Warrant Unit and the UPD Metro Unit located the man.
