Utica man alleged to have stolen, damaged generator from New Hartford business

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. - A Utica man is facing felony charges after authorities say he stole a large trailer-mounted generator from a New Hartford business.

According to New Hartford Police, James J. Hanretty, 24, of Utica has been charged with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree criminal mischief..

Police said that on April 26, the business "Claim Masters" reported that a large trailer-mounted generator was taken from their property overnight. Police located the stolen generator at Hanretty's residence in South Utica later that morning. The generator, worth more than $15,000, had been damaged to the point where it is now inoperable.

Hanretty was arrested on May 1, arraigned in the Town Of New Hartford Court and is due back in court at a later date.
