(WKTV) - A Utica man faces charges in connection with a December shooting, Utica police said.
James M. Jackson, 23, of Saratoga Street, is charged with assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree.
According to officials, on Dec. 18 Shawn Ward was shot multiple times with a .22-caliber weapon in a home on Cottage Place. During the incident, the victim's dog was also shot and killed. Jackson was taken into custody Tuesday on Sherman Drive. Police say at that time, he was found to be in possession of a quantity of crack cocaine.
Additional charges may be filed at a later date.
Police said Jackson is not charged with killing the dog, but it will be part of the case when it's presented to a grand jury.
According to Sgt. Steve Hauck, Ward remains hospitalized and has gone through multiple surgeries.
"This was a real serious crime," Hauck said. "This could have easily been a homicide."
