Utica man sentenced on federal drug charges

(WKTV) - A Utica man was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison after a conviction on drug charges, U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian said Wednesday.

Dean Steppello, 43, of Utica, was convicted by a jury in September of two counts of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Because the jury found he had more than 500 grams of cocaine, a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison was required.

Steppello was sentenced to 63 months in prison, a three-year term of supervised release after his incarceration and a $200 special assessment fine.

Steppello was arrested by members of the New York State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team in Utica as he attempted to deliver four ounces of cocaine. A search of his home resulted in the recovery of an additional 1 3/4 pounds of cocaine, drug paraphernalia, a shotgun and $4,000 in cash.
