(WKTV) - A Utica woman is accused of using her 9-year-old son to carry stolen items out of the New Hartford Walmart, New Hartford police said.

Carrie R. Patterson, 31, of Kemble Street, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and petit larceny.

According to authorities, police were called to the store after employees at the Walmart in Consumer Square saw Patterson allegedly select four items of women's clothing and put the items into a bag. She then is alleged to have handed the bag to her son and told him to carry the bag out of the store. Police say Patterson made no attempt to pay for the items she had concealed.

The child was turned over to a grandparent.

Child Protective Services were also notified and investigation was requested.

Patterson was given appearance tickets. Additional charges may be filed.
