Val Bialas Terrain Park opening Thursday

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Snow was being made at Utica's Val Bialas Ski Center Wednesday, the recent cold temperatures and snow allowing the Terrain Park to open Thursday at noon. The ski center will be open on limited hours from noon to 5 pm. through the rest of school's winter break.

"Last night when temperatures went down into the single digits, the volume of snow increased greatly," said President and CEO of Val Bialas Sports Center Inc. "When it's up in the 30's and you're making snow it's wet and a little sloppy and water runs out of it so almost half its volume is gone almost immediately but this stuff here is coming out nice and fluffy and you can see as it shoots up into the air it's just very nice looking snow."

Ford says the terrain park will be open from noon to 5 through the rest of school's winter break, and with more snow expected, he hopes to open the tubing park too by the weekend.

"It takes some grooming to get these things ready, it's not just a matter of okay grounds white we'll let them go down , we've got to make sure the rocks that were on the ground are covered with snow, so we have to really groom the whole surface," said Ford.

The ski center hopeful the weather cooperates this winter with their plans.

"Last year the chair lift didn't even open one time I think thats the first time in its history that it never ran a single day the entire winter," said Ford. "The ice skating rink didn't freeze so all we had was the terrain park and tubing we had nothing else."

Free sledding is open at Val Bialas at sledders' own risk.
