Valley school officials look ahead following defeat of merger plan

By NICOLE HART

FRANKFORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - Since the merger plan was voted down last night, a lot of people, including the superintendents, are asking "what's next?" and "where do we go from here?"

Officials say the answer is - there isn't one...yet.

The votes were counted and the merger was shot down on Thursday night. Even superintendent, Bob Reina, admits, he went home and added up the votes from the four school districts to look at all of the numbers.

"People took a solid interest in this, and this was serious decision on their part," Reina said. "I believe, in the final analysis, that people did what they thought was in the best interest of their children and grandchildren... and that's all you can ask of people."

Reina says that among having concerns with transportation and the structure of the proposed board of education that came with the merger plan, the Frankfort-Schuyler district had another question - "why should we have to do this again?"

"A year ago, our school district closed an elementary school. People in our community feel like we've already merged." said Reina.

So again we asked, what's next?

"Everybody right now is planning on meeting with the boards of education. There really isn't much that can take place until the boards sit down and meet and review all of the information," Reina explained.

However, while that all happens and things start to settle down, Reina says he knows people will be dealing with a lot of emotions.

"Yes, there will be a period of disappointment and some upset, I understand that. But these are good people. The valley's good people."

One thing Reina says to keep in mind...

"If you look behind me on the wall, you see that sign?"

It reads: "is it good for kids?"
