(WKTV) - A Vernon man faces charges after he allegedly hit a dog and fled the scene on Wednesday.

Micah B. Wilson, 39, is charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury to an animal.

According to New York State Police, a woman was walking a dog along the shoulder of Graves Road in the Town of Vernon at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday when a car approached her. The woman said she waved her arms to try to get the car to slow down and warn her that she was walking a dog. However, police say the car struck the dog and continued without stopping. The dog died at the scene.

The woman then followed in her own car and located the vehicle that hit her dog in a driveway on Graves Road. After confronting the man, the woman called 911 to report the incident.

During an interview, it was determined Wilson was intoxicated and there was evidence of the collision with the dog on the passenger side of Wilson's 2003 Cadillac Seville. Wilson refused to submit to a chemical test.

Wilson was sent to Oneida County Jail on $500 cash or $1,000 bond.
