Vernon resident takes top prize in cyber competition

(WKTV) - A Vernon resident has won the New York Cyber Aces Competition, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.

Kevin Stilwell of Vernon placed first in the contest, with Dan Woodruff of Henrietta placing second and Mark Scrano of Manlius placing third.

The Cyber Aces Competition is a virtual statewide contest to help identify those who are qualified to work within the state's cyber industry. More than 1,000 candidates were whittled down to 40 who competed in the online championship. The contenders included college students, job seekers and high school students.

Competitors were challenged using SANS NetWars, the same hands-on simulation used by the military to train officers in network warfare.

The three winners will share $10,000 in prize money awarded by Cyber Aces. The three will now have a chance to participate in the Panopoly competition at the New York State Cyber Security Conference in Albany.
