(WKTV) - A Westmoreland woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after she allegedly was driving the wrong way on the arterial, New Hartford police say.

Shelia L. Knapp, 56, of Westmoreland is charged with driving while intoxicated.

According to officials, around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday officers were dispatched to be on the look out for a small silver car driving eastbound in the westbound lane of Route 840 near Commercial Drive. The car continued going the wrong way on the divided highway onto Route 8 northbound near Genesee Street, when it entered into an accident scene being investigated by New Hartford Police.

Because of the accident, the northbound lane of Route 8 was closed, which prevented the car from striking any vehicles head on.  After an investigation, Knapp was arrested on DWI charges. Knapp will answer charges in February in New Hartford Village Court.
