NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Whitesboro man has died from injuries he sustained after being hit by a car two weeks ago in a Lowe's parking lot.

According to police, Dr. Firooz N. Tabrizi, 79, of Whitesboro, died February 6 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica of injuries he sustained on January 24 when he was struck by a car while walking in the parking lot of Lowe's on Middle Settlement Road in New Hartford.

At the time of the accident, police said Tabrizi had parked his car, obtained a shopping cart from a cart corral in the parking lot, then started walking toward the front entrance of the store pushing the shopping cart. Police say also at that time, a car driven by Mary A. Becker, 73, also of Whitesboro, was attempting to enter a parking space when Becker's foot slipped off of the brake pedal and accidentally depressed the accelerator pedal, causing her car to accelerate forward striking the shopping cart being pushed by Tabrizi.

The force of the collision caused Tabriz to fall backwards striking his head on the pavement. Tabrizi also suffered a leg injury in the accident.

Oneida County Coroner Stephen Wolanin listed the cause of death to multiple traumatic injuries.

New Hartford Police issued Becker a summons for failure to exercise due care while driving near a pedestrian. Becker is scheduled to answer the charge in New Hartford Town Court on March 6.
