Whittemore found guilty of murder

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - A Monroe County jury has found Clayton Whittemore guilty of second-degree murder  in the death of his girlfriend, Alexandra Kogut.

Kogut was killed in 2012 in her SUNY Brockport dorm room.

During the case, there has never been doubt about Whittemore's guilt. However, the defense has argued for a lesser charge, saying Whittemore had suffered from extreme emotional distress when he killed Kogut. The prosecution, meanwhile, has sought a murder conviction.

The murder conviction shows the jury rejected the extreme emotional distress defense. Kogut's family and friends embraced and cried in the courtroom on Friday. Whittemore's mother and sister quickly left.

Whittemore faces 25 years to life in prison. He will be sentenced July 15.
