NORWICH, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Norwich couple is facing charges after police say the wife tried to mail drugs to her husband, who was serving time inside the Chenango County Correctional Facility.

Authorities said Kenneth D. Peer is in the Correctional Facility for a parole violation, and while there, his wife, Cynthia M. Peer tried to send him drugs via United States Mail by hiding the drugs in the spine of a book and mailing it to him in jail. The drugs were found by corrections officers who were performing the routine task of checking inmate mail for drugs and other dangerous items, authorities said.

Both Cynthia and Kenneth Peer were charged with first-degree promoting of prison contraband and fifth-degree conspiracy.

Cynthia was issued appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date. Kenneth Peer will remain in Chenango County Correctional Facility until called to appear by the court.
