Wind adds realism to National Guard training drills

(WKTV) - Mother Nature added a touch of realism to a National Guard drill in Oriskany on Wednesday.

Hundreds of National Guard soldiers and airmen are conducting training exercises in case of a disaster situation. Wednesday's winds added some real-life conditions to the drills.

The drills include HAZMAT setups, getting chemicals off people and locating victims in an emergency. The leaders are trained to improvise with the conditions at hand.

"It makes it much more interesting," said Task Force Commander Benjamin Richards. "We are the Army, so we have the means to deal with it, but when you do have weather like we've had the last few days, it does complicate things. Typically, it slows things down."

The training exercises continue through Friday.
