UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Symptom management are two words with which allergy sufferers are very familiar-especially this time of year. The question is: what in that sea of allergy meds in your local pharmacy will give you the most relief?
Tony Chiffy of Parkway Drugs in Utica has been helping allergy sufferers for years. His loyal customers tell him what works and what doesn't. He gives us his top three pics for over-the-counter relief.
"The top three allergy medicines long-acting, over the counter, you have Claritin, which is Loratedine. It's a non-drowsy formula, 24-hour formula. Another non - drowsy formula which is very effective is Allegra, and Fexofenadine. Again, 24 hours, which is very good. Now you can get into a little bit of drowsiness with Zyrtec, which is Cetizirine. Usually when you get a little bit of drowsiness sometimes it becomes more effective," says Chiffy.
Chiffy says that the big news for allergy sufferers this season is Nasacort-a steroid nasal spray which, until now, was only available by prescription.
"What it's purpose is in my opinion is, when it's very severe out, you can use this for a week and it'll clear out symptoms much better, much quicker, along with using an antihistamine at the same time," says Chiffy, adding that this is a huge deal for severe allergy sufferers because many are already on an prescription steroid nasal spray.
