Work underway on Sauquoit Creek to prevent future flooding issues

YORKVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Work is currently underway to fix the Sauquoit Creek, which was hit hard during heavy rains from Tropical storms Irene and Lee last year.

One of the businesses that sustained the worst damage was Joe Tahan's Furniture in Yorkville which sits right on the bank of the creek. Company President Al Tahan says they've also been busy flood-proofing the building and cleaning up from the storms.

Meanwhile, village and town officials are working to make sure it doesn't happen again.

"Honestly it's been a massive coordination between state and local governments and the federal government with FEMA," said Al Tahan said. "I think it's really admirable, the work that's been done on Sauquoit Creek and I'm sure many other creeks in the state. It exceeds anything that has been done in the last 30 years from what I know."

Tahan is also building a trench behind the building to divert the water if it floods again.
