(WKTV) - Thousands of wreaths were placed next to the graves of U.S. veterans on Saturday, including at ceremonies at area cemeteries.

A ceremony at Rome Cemetery on Jervis Avenue was one of three local ceremonies as part of the "Wreaths Across America Day."

The event was conducted with the help of members of local military organizations, as well as the Junior ROTC cadets from Rome Free Academy and Proctor High Schools.

Fundraisers helped purchase all the wreaths.

The ceremony in Rome was attended by State Sen. Joseph Griffo of Rome and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi of Utica.

The other two local wreath-laying ceremonies took place at Evergreen Cemetery in the Town of Lee and at the Westernville Presbyterian Cemetery.
