Zoning board rejects bid for East Dominick slaughterhouse

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The zoning board in the City of Rome voted down a variance Wednesday that would have paved the way for a meat processing plant on East Dominick Street.

The vote was 3-2 against allowing the slaughterhouse. The developer was not able to prove the hardship requirement for the variance.

The City of Rome will now assist the developer in finding an alternate location. About 100 people attended Wednesday's meeting.

An architect gave a presentation about the development of the possible plant and the developer discussed plans.

Some residents voiced concerns about traffic, the odor the plant could bring, noise and the possibility of rats. Others talked about the 250 potential jobs the plant would have brought.
