Committee listens to presentation for Herkimer County jail design

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV)- A firm, with hopes to design the proposed Herkimer County Jail, made a presentation to the county's public safety committee meeting Monday night.

A representative from the Goldberg Group Architects claims that it can offer a more cost effective design for the jail.

County officials say that the county has shelled out about $2 million to Labella Associates for the project that was priced at around $33 million.

Goldberg hasn't specifically said what their price would be for Herkimer County's proposed jail. They did, however, present an example of a jail that costs about $16 million and has around 130 beds.

The committee chairman, Leonard Hendrix, said they are willing to look into any option that would save the county money.

"Today we had about 80 inmates in and probably 50 got boarded out," Hendrix said. "So, we need a jail, whether we want it or not."

The proposed location for the jail is at the former P & C site on Route 28.
