Frankfort woman accused of attempted murder has two weeks to mull plea deal

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A plea offer has been given to the Frankfort woman charged with attempting to murder her estranged husband. Her defense attorney says they will probably go to trial.

Jenise Haddad-Smith is facing charges of attempted murder and assault against her husband Todd Smith, for a March incident that happened at Todd's parents home in Westmoreland. Both of them had to be treated for serious stab wounds.

Neither the prosecution nor the defense would discuss the details of the plea deal. Assistant District Attorney Dawn Catera-Lupi said it's a complicated case that had a lot of evidence that needed to be evaluated by a forensics lab.

Haddad-Smith's defense attorney, George Aney, said his client has two weeks to decide on the plea deal. He said in that time period it will give him more time to go over 500-600 pages of medical records and other evidence.

"The medical records, and I'll tell you the word is interesting at best as this point," Aney said. "I think there will be some very interesting and crucial evidence in those medical records."

Aney said he has only gotten the chance to read about 70 or so pages of the medical records, but what he has seen already leads him to believe the medical evidence is going to be crucial should this case go to trial. "What I saw in those lead me to believe that there is already some concern and some doubt as to what those records really show."

Haddad-Smith is due back in court on August 17 to either accept or reject the plea deal.
