Bergdahl swap a flashpoint of rival charges

By WKTV News

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans and Democrats initially praised the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl but quickly changed their tune.
Questions arose about whether the Army soldier was a deserter, and there was an outcry over the exchange of five Taliban officials.
Democrats point out GOP lawmakers just a few weeks ago were pleading with the Obama administration to do all it could to return Bergdahl home to his family.
The swap is a political flashpoint in Congress that shows no sign of abating. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is certain to face tough questions on Wednesday at a high-profile hearing in the House Armed Services Committee.

The Bergdahl case offers none of the clarity of a celebratory homecoming for a freed military captive that rallies Americans of all political persuasions.
