California fire chief eludes statewide manhunt

By WKTV News

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - After a week of futility, authorities appear no closer to finding a state fire battalion chief being sought in the stabbing death of his girlfriend.
Orville "Moe" Fleming vanished after abandoning his official California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection pickup truck in a Sacramento suburb. Sheriff's investigators are looking for him in connection with the death of 26-year-old Sarah June Douglas, whose body was found inside the south Sacramento home they had shared for the last two years.
Investigators say Fleming, who is 55, moved in with Douglas after meeting her as an escort on the Internet.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Lisa Bowman says the manhunt is complicated by Fleming's considerable skills in the outdoors, his familiarity with California's mountains and keys that give him access to state property.
