Day 4: Shutdown could grow more serious

WASHINGTON (AP) - Lawmakers say the partial government shutdown that started Tuesday seems to be quickly merging with a more critical showdown over the nation's expiring line of credit.

Meanwhile, House Republicans are keeping up a drive to open certain agencies and programs on a piecemeal basis.

And lawmakers could vote on legislation today that would authorize back pay for the 800,000 government workers on furlough.
