Cops: Solvay man kills self after 16-hour standoff

By Associated Press

SOLVAY, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a Syracuse-area man who held off police for 16 hours is dead after he shot himself in the head.

Onondaga County Undersheriff Warren Darby tells local media that 29-year-old Joseph Schell of Solvay died at a hospital Wednesday morning, about two hours after he shot himself.

Darby says Schell shot himself around 6:30 a.m. while police negotiators continued to try to talk him into surrendering.

Police had been looking for Schell since Monday afternoon when he broke into his former girlfriend's home with a gun and held her against her will for four hours.

After he fled that address, police tried to serve him with a warrant and Schell fired at the officers, launching the standoff that forced the lockdown of an elementary school and library.
