Fort Drum Soldier killed in Afghanistan

FORT DRUM, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Fort Drum Soldier was killed by small arms fire in Afghanistan. 20-year-old Jackie Diener deployed back in September with his unit in support on Operation Enduring Freedom.

Diener was killed Monday when his unit was attacked in the Kandahar Province.

Diener is from Boyne City, Michigan. He was a Cavalry Scout with the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. Diener joined the Army in March 2011. After training at Fort Benning, GA, he was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division and arrived at Fort Drum in July 2011.

Diener's awards and decorations include The Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal and the Army Combat Action Badge.

Diener is survived by his mother and father.
