ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a central New York police officer is in stable condition after he was shot in the chest by a man who was stopped while driving a stolen vehicle.

City of Ithaca officials say Officer Anthony Augustine was shot around 11 p.m. Thursday by a man who fled on foot after officers stopped the vehicle he was driving. Police say the vehicle had been reported as stolen.

Twenty-two-year-old Jamel Booker was located by a police SWAT team in an apartment shortly before 5 a.m. Friday. Booker was charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and criminal use of a firearm, both felonies. He was sent to jail on $500,000 bail.

Augustine, a five-year veteran, was operated on Friday morning.

The investigation is continuing.
