NY ex-governor testifies at sex-offender trial
NEW YORK (AP) - Former Gov. George Pataki says a creepy stranger who tagged along on a family hiking trip motivated him to keep violent sexual predators off the streets.
Pataki made the revelation Tuesday while defending himself against a civil lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan.
Six convicted sex offenders have sued the three-time governor after they were institutionalized at psychiatric centers when their prison sentences were completed in 2005.
Pataki ordered evaluations of all violent sex offenders who were set to be released after failing to get the state Legislature to act for years. A state court later ruled the practice illegal.
Pataki said a family hike soon after he became governor had motivated him. He said state troopers learned that the stranger was actually a convicted violent sex offender.
