18th-century skeletons closer to return to Lake George
LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - Skeletal remains of soldiers who died during the French and Indian War are expected to be returned this year to upstate New York for reburial.
Officials at Fort William Henry, a tourist attraction in Lake George, say an Arizona State University anthropologist has completed her research into the skeletons of more than a dozen British soldiers who died at the original fortification in the 1750s.
A spokeswoman for the fort says Thursday that the skeletons likely will be returned by the end of this summer and eventually reburied on the fort's property.
In a 2012 story by The Associated Press, fort officials publicly acknowledged for the first time that most of the skeletons they said had been reburied during a 1993 ceremony were in fact in Arizona.
