Some groups call for NYS education chief's job

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State Education Commissioner John King Jr. and the state Board of Regents say they're pushing ahead with the new Common Core learning reforms even as some teachers and parent groups call for King's resignation.

Lisa Rudley of the New York State Allies for Public Education says Tuesday they have no choice but to call for King's resignation.

Her's and other groups say King's push to adopt the nation's Common Core curriculum to reform public education is ignoring their views. They say the demands on students and schools are too radical and too fast.

But King continues to have the strong support of the Board of Regents, which has encountered similar loud opposition to efforts to improve instruction over the past 20 years.
