Fire Investigation Underway in New London :
An overnight fire outside of Rome in New London has displaced at least 10 people this morning. The structure fire started in the garage and moved to the house. Three fire departments responded to the fire which was under control 40 minutes later. The cause of the fire is still under investigation this morning.
Swine Flu Tests Come Back Negative:
Locally theres good news on the swine flu front. All suspected cases in Oneida County have come back negative. No word yet on the suspected cases in Herkimer and Otsego counties. That leaves lewis county as the only local county dealing with a confirmed case.
Bernanke To Address Congress:
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is expected to paint a portrait of the nation's economic health today when he reports to Congress. It's likely he will speak about economic improvements but he is likely to warn that it could still take a long time for the economy to get back to normal.
Money Could Mean More Doctors:
$11 million could mean more doctors here locally in the Mohawk Valley. Governor David Paterson recently announced plans for the Doctors Across New York program. The money is used to help pay student loans of doctors who commit to a minimum of 5 years of work in an under served area, just like the Mohawk Valley. Four separate hospitals in the area will see money from the program. The time line for the project: six months for hospitals to recruit doctors. After that time the funds won't be available.
Happy Cinco de Mayo!:
Today is Cinco de Mayo, and while the holiday is celebrated here in the U.S. it won't be the same in its native county. Mexico called off its Cinco de Mayo celebrations for today, including the biggest one of all. A re-enactment of the May 5, 1862, victory over French troops in the central state of Puebla. The canceled festivities are due to the spread of swine flu in Mexico.
