Giacona Case in Court Today:
An accused 14 year old murderer, Joseph Giacona III, will not be present in Oneida County Court today when his case resumes. Attorneys will discuss his fate and the crime he is accused of killing his father. Psychiatrists for both the defense and the prosecution have examined Giacona and now the prosecution has to determine how to proceed. If they agree that Giacona acted under extreme mental duress it could make the case for manslaughter. The prosecution could also try him as an adult with murder. Prosecutors are expected to ask for a two week adjournment.
Oriskany School Budget Proposal Will Increase Spending:
The Oriskany Central School Superintendent says a proposed budget will increase spending by 2.8 percent. There are proposals to eliminate 6 full-time positions, including 3 teachers. The superintendent says the layoffs are necessary because of increased costs to most programs and an unknown amount of future state aide.
Local Attorney Under Investigation:
A local defense attorney, Devin Garramone, was arraigned in New Hartford Tuesday after he was accused of sending sexual images to a 16 year old through a cell phone. He was released on his own recognizance. Garramone is charged with disseminating indecent material to a minor. The case is under investigation and he'll be back in court on Friday June 12th.
Oneida County Tweaking Website To Attract Visitors:
The Oneida County Visitors Bureau is using the web to bring new people to the area. Kelly Blazosky became president of the bureau in April. She says with the right digital game plan, Oneida County can compete with larger hot-spots in Central New York. According to hotel occupancy records, local hotels have seen an average 6 percent increase over the past four years.
Crews Battle West Coast Wildfires:
Helicopters are fighting west coast wild fires this morning, soaking the hillsides. A 400 acre fire in Santa Barbara has caused 200 homes to be evacuated. There is a wind advisory in effect for the area until 9 am. Right now that fire is not contained. In Arizona, at least one person has been injured and FOUR homes are scorched. The Arizona fire has burned about 2,000 acres.
