Two county health departments out of flu vaccines

By PAT BAILEY

(WKTV) - Two area county health departments - Oneida and Otsego - say they are out of the seasonal flu vaccine. However, some are still available at private practices and pharmacies.

Health officials across the state say there was quite a rush to get the seasonal flu vaccine this year.

"In some of our clinics where we would normally have 80 people being vaccinated, we are having over 200," said Dam Gilmore, the Acting Public Health Director for Oneida County.

Because of the high numbers, Oneida and Otsego counties are completely out of their supply of seasonal flu shots. Herkimer County health officials say they still have a supply, but that it is dwindling.

The reason for this is a growing concern of swine flu, putting the seasonal flu vaccines on hold.

"What's happening now is that the seasonal flu vaccine was shipped several weeks ago," Gilmore said. "Now the process of shipping the H1N1 vaccine has begun. So, there are bottlenecks in the system."

Gilmore said people can still receive a flu shot - they just can not walk into their county health department to get one. Instead, those wanting one will have to go to their doctor, or a pharmacy.

Health officials hope to get more vaccines in the coming weeks.
