First "In-School" H1N1 vaccine clinic in Oneida County goes smoothly

REMSEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's a massive undertaking, with a lot of planning involved, but day one of Oneida County's "In-School" vaccination clinics goes smoothly. The Remsen Central School District is the first of 19 districts in the county to go through the process.

The cafeteria at Remsen Elementary School was transformed this Monday morning into a clinic, and child after child was given the H1N1 vaccine. There are just over 500 students in the district, but Superintendent Ann Turner is not releasing the number of students who actually were immunized.

Oneida County Health Department Quality Improvement Coordinator Cathe Bullwinkle was on-hand to oversee the process and says the buildup to the first clinic was big, but everything went seamlessly, "We spent last evening calling parents with last minute questions off of the consent forms, just to make sure we were all ready and that if we had any concerns that they were taken care of. And did they? Yes they did, we actually were perfect this morning, every concern that we had in advance we reached a parent last evening whether they should have the flu mist of the flu shot. And what kinds of concerns did they have? Just to make sure the parent answered the question correctly, some of the consent forms are a little confusing, sometimes parents answer that they hadH1N1 instead of the child so we just need to clarify."

The four school districts in the most wintry prone areas were chosen to hold the clinics first, just in case we do get bad weather in the coming weeks.

Next up on the list, Holland Patent. That is set for next Monday, November 30th.

If parents in any of the districts have questions, they are urged to call their child's school or the district office, but parents don't have to wait for the clinic to come to their district, they can attend the "open" clinics that continue to take place here in Utica and in Rome.
