Some H1N1 vaccine administered by Oneida County Health Department recalled

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A manufacturer of the H1N1 nasal spray vaccines is recalling over $4.5 million doses because of a lack of potency.

500 of those doses were delivered to Oneida County, 400 were delivered in Otsego County, and another 300 were delivered in Herkimer County. Health officials in all three counties said all those doses have been used.

Routine tests of the H1N1 nasal spray vaccines showed some doses had fallen slightly below the pre-specified limits or were expected to fall below the limits in the coming weeks. Even though it sounds serious, health officials said there is no reason to panic.

"Absolutely none what so ever," said Ken Fanelli of the Oneida County Health Department. "There is no health issue here or safety issue. All of the vaccines in question passed all the tests for purity and safety. It was just a question of strength."

Some of the doses could have been given to children under 10 - a group that at one time was at the top of the list for nasal spray vaccines. However, because those children who received the vaccine were required to get a second dose anyway, they too will be okay if they received a recalled dose.

"There is no reason for concern, and there is nothing they need do if it was the initial dose," Fanelli said. "As I say, they would need to get a second dose four weeks following the first administration. We're confident it will provide adequate immunity."
