Recycling Styrofoam and other materials easy at Yorkville site

Dave Dellecese

YORKVILLE - Going green. Cutting your carbon emission. All hot topics when it comes to the environment.

Meyda Lighting in Yorkville is one business that's trying to do their part. And with today being National Recycling Day, they want to let the public know that you too at home can do your part.

Each year many Americans pay hundreds of dollars to have their Styrofoam hauled away. This is because it's a special service...and Meyda Lighting is no different.

They were spending anywhere between $200 - $300 a week to have their Styrofoam picked up. That's when they realized there was another way.

"We were throwing our Styrofoam away and it was costing our company a small fortune to throw that much Styrofoam away," said Bob Cohen of Meyda Lighting. "We knew that there must be a use for this Styrofoam with all the packing we do. So, we developed out own Styrofoam shredder."

Cohen said the shredder cost about $10,000 to make, but in the last year it has paid for it's self.

If you have pieces of Styrofoam laying around the house you can bring them down to Meyda, and they'll gladly shred them and use the end product for packing.

If you are not able to make it down today they will continue to take the Styrofoam Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. every week.

And Meyda will continue to recycle not only Styrofoam, but bubble wrap and packing material for the rest of the year.

While they realize this is just the tip of the green ice burg, it is a start. Being that they are a lighting store, they also have the energy saver light bulbs for sale, and a light bulb specialist on hand to answer all your lighting questions.
