DEC conducting traffic stops for emissions checks

(WKTV) - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was out in force Wednesday conducting emission checks in the spirit of Earth Day.

The checks took place on Leland Avenue in Utica. A few violations were caught Wednesday, including one truck that was blowing blue smoke, meaning its emissions didn't pass regulations.

These stops are meant to ensure a clean environment for everyone.

"Utica is actually designated an environmental justice area," said Lt. Matthew Jacoby with the DEC. "Which means that all people, regardless of race, color, economic income, have the right to have environmental enforcement in their area."

The DEC was targeting heavy duty diesel vehicles for the checks.
