Meyda Tiffany Using Styrofoam Recycling Center

Nate Crossett

Got Styrofoam? A local manufacturing company wants to take it off your hands. Meyda Tiffany, In Yorkville, encourages all schools, businesses and residents to drop off unwanted packaging materials to the first of-its-kind styrofoam recycling center.

"Styrofoam is non-biodegradable, and it can take thousands of years for nature to decompose it, " said Meyda President Bob Cohen. "Our new program will take these packaging materials out of the waste stream. It is just part of our environmental conservation programs, and our public service efforts."

The machine is pretty simple. The clean blocks of styrofoam go in, and the finely shredded packing comes out.

The Environmental Services Unit of Empire State Development Corporation provided half of the $15,000 project cost.

"This program is truly a win-win situation for the community, and for the environment, and I commend Meyda Tiffany for their commitment to this project," said Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito.
