Envirothon teaches students about all things green

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Herkimer area high school students take part in a statewide competition aimed at all things green.

Envirothon is a statewide competition centered around environmental issues and teaching students about the environment. Herkimer high school students gathered to check out the Envirothon Thursday at HCCC.

There was a test, but also time to check out the wildlife, learn about forestry and soil, "The biggest thing is the experience and not get so wrapped up in the competition and trying to win the event but taking one thing away and maybe concentrate on one study area where you might focus your college career and possibly your life long career," says Jerry Smithson of H.C. Soil & Water Conservation.

After today's event, the winning group will advance to a state Envirothon to be held in late May.
