Oneonta using recycled products to remove snow and ice

ONEONTA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The City of Oneonta is going green to deal with the white stuff.

The city will begin using Sunstone recycled glass this winter in an effort to cut down on the impact that road salt has on both vehicles and roadways in the area.

But that doesn't mean that salt is out; the city will instead use a mixture of glass and salt on the streets. The glass, which will outweigh the salt in the mix in a three-to-one ratio, reflects sunlight to help melt snow.

The Sunstone glass, which is 100% recycled and environmentally friendly, is being purchased from Andela Products in Richfield Springs, an Otsego County firm. The new plan is expected to save money for the city while promoting green products.
