Earth Day: Scrap metal donated for art at Sculpture Space

By By CAROLINE GABLE

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Donating scrap metal for sculptures is how one recycling company is celebrating Earth Day.

Empire Recycling Corporation gave extra material to some local artists Thursday for a charity project.

The artists will create a one-of-a-kind chair that's going to be featured at the Sculpture Space gallery and then sold on September 22.

John Von Bergen has been participating in this project since its inception forty years ago. He says his passion is creating something unexpected from recycled metal.

"Sometimes people still think it's trash, but when they find the utility of it, their mind changes, pretty much," Von Bergen said. "Actually, the pieces that come out of this end up surprisingly not looking like trash."

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and more than one billion people in 190 countries are taking action Thursday to make the earth a more "green friendly" place.
