Good turnout for Earth Day at Oneida/Herkimer Solid Waste Authority

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - For the past five years, the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has held an Earth Day Open House during this weekend in April.

Earth Day is always on April 22, but this year that falls on Monday, so the OCSWA held its open house on Saturday.

Hundreds turned out to safely get rid of household items they no longer need. People brought in enough old pant, books and electronics to fill up that section of the facility.

Curtis Nichols of Barneveld brought his five year old son Christian to the open house and gave him a tour of all the Solid Waste Authroity has to offer.

Nichols says this facility is very intriguing, especially for kids. He said, "It was quite interesting for Christian because they let him push the button and watch the material go through the shredder, so it was quite engaging."

That button was to the Confidata truck paper shredder, that was set up for free.

Tom Bush, of Confidata in Utica, says if area residents didn't make it to the open house on Saturday, they can bring their documents to get shredded for 15 cents per pound. He said, "One or two bags they come in with, they're worried about identity theft and they want to watch that material get shredded and we recycle, everything goes to our paper mill, and gets recycled back into napkins and paper towels and things like that."

OHSWA RecyclingCoordinator Jamie Tuttle says this day brings many people down here that may have never come before. She said, "This is really a way to bring people down to the facility and if you know you have papers that you want to have shredded, maybe you'll learn about our other programs, what you can do with those chemicals you find under your sink, or the old plastic lawn furniture you have in your backyard."

The OHSWA also had truckloads of rain barrels and compost barrels for sale, and sales were through the roof.

The facility is open every Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
