AGREEMENT REACHED: Reaction from Assemblywoman Destito

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito reacted to the agreement reached between Oneida County and the Oneida Indian Nation. Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente announced the plans at the county office building.

MAY 8th: DESTITO'S STATEMENT:
"I would concur with County Executive Picente that all the parties involved must carefully review this tentative agreement in the coming days, and I will not comment directly on specifics in this plan until I have read it carefully. However, I must commend the County Executive, and Oneida Nation Representative Ray Habritter, Jr. for working diligently in trying to resolve disputes which have divided the Oneida Nation, and residents of Oneida County for decades.

I applaud Picente's decision to hold a meeting in the near future to give the public a change to comment on it. Initially, I believe that if approved, this proposal can encourage the state to come to a resolution on the issue of sales taxes paid by non-Indians a Oneida Nation-owned businesses. In the coming days, I will be examining the proposal carefully, and listening to the views of my constituents, members of the Oneida County Board of Legislators who must vote on it, and everyone else would be affected by this agreement."

MAY 7th: DESTITO'S STATEMENT:
“I have always believed that negotiations had to begin at the local level with regard to property taxes and land-into-trust. I applaud the County Executive for his effort to bring about resolution to this long-standing conflict in our region. I look forward to reviewing the details of the plan. I await the reaction of all the parties involved, including the community, as well as members of the Oneida County Board of Legislators.”
