10 confirmed swine flu cases in Otsego County
OTSEGO COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - There are now ten confirmed cases of swine flu in Otsego County, some of which involve students. The health department is urging people to continue preventative measures, including not going school or work if you're sick with flu-like symptoms. According to the Otsego County Health Department, most of the cases are spread across two school districts - Morris Central School and Oneonta Central School. That said, health officials believe that students throughout the county's schools may have swine flu, though many cases go unreported or aren't as severe. Of the ten confirmed cases in the area currently, seven are Morris Central School students and two are from Oneonta High School students. Also, nine students at Cooperstown High School have been sent home in the past week and are are being tested as well for the flu. While there is one other case not related to the schools, the health department is not releasing where the case is located. The health department is in constant contact with schools and simply hopes to convey this message to students and parents. "If you're sick, stay home," said Cynthia Moore of the Otsego County Health Department. "that's the key. And you have to stay home for seven days. And that's hard, because people are feeling better three or four days later. But you can still spread the disease for up to seven days.So it's important just to stay strong. It's a tough time of year." Oneida County currently has two confirmed cases, two in Lewis County, and none in Herkimer County. Most Popular |
