Spitzer talks about Mohawk Valley in first State of Upstate address

Susan Campbell

BUFFALO - Governor Eliot Spitzer is focused on "revitalizing" upstate. Today the governor outlined his plan to pump $1 billion dollars into Upstate New York.

His is a plan to develop the economy and make upstate a desirable place for people to live, work, and raise their families. In Buffalo today, the governor hit the main points of his proposed $1 billion dollar revitalization fund.

The plan includes money for new housing, improved agriculture, education, and crime fighting and state park revitalization, to name a few.

But most of all, the governor's goal is to attract new businesses to upstate, and keep young people in the area. Governor Spitzer says many of the ideas put forth today came from regional blueprint sessions he held all over the state over the past year.

"We heard in many cases, the problem is not that businesses don't want to locate here," Spitzer said. "The problem is - there are often no suitable sites that they can locate. For example, of the 960,000 acres that make up Herkimer County, only 50 of those acres are truly development ready."

The governor also mentioned funding the Marcy NanoTech site to move it towards development-ready status. That could mean anything from help with infrastructure to support for planning and engineering.
