Voters hit the polls for New York Mills mayoral race

By SUSAN CAMPBELL

NEW YORK MILLS - There are more than 1,000 registered voters in New York Mills, and many of them hit the polls Tuesday.

Voters in New York Mills began casting their ballots at noon. The mayor's seat and two village trustee positions are at stake. In the mayor's race it's incumbent Mayor Robert Maciol against current Village Trustee John Bialek.

Each has significant experience in village government.

"For the past eight years since I've been in office, we've accomplished a lot," Maciol said.

"I've also been around," Bialek said. "I've got 10 years on him, because I've got 18 years of serving on the board."

Even though both candidates have worked side by side for eight years, they both have very different opinions about what matters most to the voters in New York Mills.

"Certainly one of the major things we have to fight is the NYRI power project which is set to run the entire length of our Main Street," Maciol said. "In the backyards of the houses ... that would rip our community in half, so that certainly is a priority to fight that project."

"We'd like to spend some more money on our roads," said Bialek. "And our infrastructure is probably our main goal."

Polls were open at the municipal building on Maple Street until 9 p.m. Tuesday.
