As of news time at 11pm, the senate and the assembly were working hard in Albany in an effort to pass the state budget within the next 24 hours.

It will still be late, but considering the turmoil in Albany over the last several weeks some lawmakers say it's not bad.

WKTV spoke with Senator Joe Griffo who says the budget may be due at midnight but everyone is working hard to make sure it is, at the latest, done by the end of April first.

Meantime other lawmakers are saying the 124 billion dollar budget will not be ready until the end of the week making it the latest its been in four years.

According to Griffo, negotiations on health appropriations are happening right now, and will continue for as long as it takes. He said changing governors has been a challenge but there is one other big hurdle that has lawmakers tip toeing on certain appropriations.

State Senator Joe Griffo, “The extreme challenge we have to face is the economic uncertainty that exists and the fact that we're dealing with over a 4.5 billion dollar deficit so obviously we have looked at ways to reduce some of the spending that was originally proposed from the governor.”

Griffo went on to say that everyone is cooperating and remaining hopeful that the budget will be passed in a timely manner.

As the voting continues, here's what we do know. A gas tax proposal was defeated.

The governor’s budget called for a merging of gas taxes. It would have eliminated the cap on gasoline taxes and added an adjustable tax that would go up five percent each year.

According to senate James Seward, that proposal was cut out.
