Poll shows many New Yorkers support tax cap plan

By: The Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. David Paterson, buoyed by a poll that
shows three in four New Yorkers support his tax cap proposal, is
turning up the pressure on the Legislature in its waning days in
Albany while taking a swipe at the union coalition that opposes
him.

The Democrat says the Senate Republican majority's counter
proposal to allow school districts to phase out property taxes
altogether is half a solution and would require an increase in the
state income tax.

Paterson also says the coalition of powerful teachers unions and
others opposing a limit on school tax increases were outrageous to
say his proposal was dead on arrival.

Paterson held a news conference with Long Island taxpayers
supporting his plan and says he will continue to push the issue
this legislative election year.
