Retired Army Officer to run for Lee Supervisor
Republican Richard Smith, a retired 24 year Army Officer and former commander of the Rome Salvation Army, officially announced his candidacy for the Town of Lee Supervisor Saturday May 9th at Yaworski's Restaurant on Lee Center -Taberg road. SUBMITTED PHOTO LEE, N.Y. - Republican Richard Smith, a retired 24 year Army Officer and former commander of the Rome Salvation Army, officially announced his candidacy for the Town of Lee Supervisor Saturday May 9th at Yaworski's Restaurant on Lee Center -Taberg road. Before a vast background of red, white and blue and large political signs, Smith, 49, addressed a large number of supporters. "I'm asking you to help me build the type of community that expands our quality of life and protects the interest of all the residents," Smith said to the clapping crowd. "Now is the time to recommit ourselves to an open, transparent, and inclusive government. It's time for a new attitude and a new recognition that we are all partners in governing." Smith stated "that he chose Yaworski's for his announcement to thank and recognize Don and Eileen Page for investing in Lee, keeping a family place and historic landmark alive." Smith stated that "today's economy poses many challenges but let me make it clear right here, right now, when elected I will propose no new taxes," continuing with the Towns 27 year run on no tax increases. "I live in Lee and my family lives in Lee" Smith's background includes serving in the US ARMY for 24 years before retiring in 2002 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. Smith is the recipient of the Legion of Merit the Military's highest award. After retiring Smith along with his wife Terri for 6 years served as a Captains and Commanders in the Salvation Army including the Rome Salvation Army. Smith is currently a case manager for the Neighborhood Center. Richard Smith is a 1978 graduate of Rome Free Academy; he holds two Associate Degrees and a Bachelors Degree in Social Structure, Social Theory, and Social Change from Empire State College, SUNY Smith along with his wife Terri reside on Wager Drive, They have three married children, Lindsey, Brian, and Dustin, and two wonderful grandchildren Smith stated "that he has never held a publicly elected office. He said" I think it's time for new leadership…..new vision, I want this campaign to be "built on your ideas and guided by your priorities." Smith acknowledged that this race will be a challenge running against the current supervisor a 34 year incumbent. Smith has been endorsed by both the Republican and Independence Parties. |
