Utica Common Council candidate wants tougher codes enforcement

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A candidate for Utica Common Council is upset about an eyesore right in her own neighborhood and she says that if she's elected, it won't happen on her watch.

Democrat Council Candidate Anne Sullivan lives around the corner from this burned-out home on Lowell Ave in South Utica.

The basement is full of garbage, the roof is mostly gone, and the home gives off a foul odor.

Sullivan is fuming over the fact that the dangerous eyesore isn't even boarded up. She says the people who live in South Utica deserve better.

"The cellar is full of garbage, there's a horrible odor that these people have to deal with when they're sitting on their porches at night," Sullivan said. "If you had a strong wind, debris is flying off the roof into their yard."

Sullivan says city officials told her the home's fate is in the city law department's hands.

Her opponent in the council race, incumbent Rocco Giruzzi, says he hasn't received one complaint about the home - and his phone number is listed and published twice a year in the newspaper.

He says he'll look into the home's status.
