Appeals court to hold hearing on Lieutenant Governor appointment
NEW YORK (AP) - An appeals court is set to hear arguments on
whether New York Gov. David Paterson's appointment of a lieutenant governor was legitimate. Senate Republicans say Paterson's appointment of longtime government adviser Richard Ravitch was unconstitutional. Lawyers for the Democratic governor say state law allowed Paterson to fill the post until the next election. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in Brooklyn. The Appellate Division has ruled that Ravitch can serve as New York's lieutenant governor during the legal dispute but can't preside over the Senate. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press.
